In the past, it was simple to have a spare key made for your vehicle. Just as you would if you were making a spare key for your home, you could simply take your key to a local hardware store to have a copy made. Then, you could give one to a family member or keep it in a safe place in case you locked yourself out of your car or in case someone else needed to have easy access to your vehicle.
Nowadays, it isn't that simple. You can't just have a key made at the hardware store for modern cars since newer cars all use transponder keys. Basically, these keys have to be specially programmed in order to be copied and used. They can be much more expensive to make, and you generally have to hire either a locksmith or someone from the dealership to make them for you. This can seem like a lot of frustration for nothing, but there are a few reasons why these keys really are worth the extra cost and aggravation.
1. You Can Reduce the Chances of Theft
Having your car stolen can seem like a nightmare. In the past, this was a lot easier than it was today, due in part to the fact that keys could be easily made. Now, your vehicle will not start without the proper transponder key, and it's pretty unlikely that a thief will go through the time, trouble and cost of having a transponder key made. This can help you keep your car safe from theft, even if you live in a neighborhood with high crime rates or if you aren't able to keep your car safe in a garage.
2. They Work With Your Alarm System
Having an alarm system on your car is a great way to deter thieves, scare them off in the event that they do try something and alert those in the surrounding area of the theft that is taking place. However, if you are unable to disable your alarm quickly when it goes off, you could find yourself in a potentially annoying and embarrassing situation. Transponder keys generally work with car alarm systems to turn the alarm off when a button is pressed or when the proper key is put into the ignition, which can make the use of your car alarm easy.
3. They Provide Added Features
You might not like the cost of a transponder key, but you probably enjoy being able to use your remote to lock and unlock your car or to start your engine without ever getting behind the wheel. These features would not be possible without a transponder key.
Even though it costs more to have a transponder key made for your car, these keys are beneficial in more ways than one. Luckily, your car dealership or a good locksmith (such as one from http://www.alocksmithriverside.com) should be able to make extra keys for you as you need them.Share
